The default grain tends to become unstable when using clumping, due to "constraint averaging".
When turning it off though (and making sure clumping+internal collisions weights together aren't adding up to over 1) the simulation tends to look much softer.
The solution is very high constraint iterations.

Also I gave volume rendering a try. Works pretty well.
